This week we sat down with our Managing Director Dave, finding out more about You Are Home and how it came to be as well as getting to know him better.

So, hello Dave! Where did your story start, how did you get to where you are today?

“My story started when I joined Liquid Personnel, it was a young company led by two extremely talented young gentlemen called Alex and John. It was the first job I was ever good at and they taught me a lot both professionally and personally. They were huge on development and through that I rose through the ranks. After the sale of Liquid I took some time off and during this period of time the idea of You Are Home was formed.”

Ah, so this leads onto my next question… where did the idea of You Are Home come from?

“It came from me being a bit bored to be honest! My trip was cut short due to an injury and whilst I was away I had been renting my place in town out to an Actor friend of mine. He told me there might be something here for people staying for a shorter period of time that doesn’t want to be in a hotel and want those home comforts. It gave me the idea to start phoning round production companies. It was funny because coming from recruitment I was used to people telling me to go away, but they weren’t telling me to go away they were loving the idea!”

What is it that makes You Are Home special?

“There is a lot that makes YAH special, I am really fortunate to work with some really talented and personable people. We frequently get really positive comments on our customer service and I think that’s part of the reason why we have done so well. Also, our main USP of a fully corporate yet residential place to stay, guaranteeing your next door neighbour will be a business traveller, it’s rare these days. On top of that, when you look at a residential apartment, it has been built for long term living. You know, your full size fridge freezer, strong Wifi these things we may take for granted in our day to day lives at home, which You Are Home are able to offer.”

Definitely, you don’t get that everywhere! What is your favourite part of your job?

“Working with you obviously! But also, watching the company grow and people in our company grow. One of my favourite stories of the company is you yourself (referring to the interviewer Georgie Hale) when you approached me as a member of Guest Services and as I like to say ‘created your own job’ and you’re now our Marketing Executive with plans to develop further. Being able to work in this way and giving people opportunities, driving the company forward. I take a lot of pride in that. It’s exciting to see where the company is now and I wouldn’t have believed you if you told me we would get here. It’s been an interesting time, having a 14-month-old company specialising in business travel accommodation during a global pandemic.”

Very exciting times ahead for YAH, but slightly away from the company now. What is your biggest passion, what do you like to get up to when you’re not being the MD of You Are Home?

“I’ve got a little Frenchie as you know! Also, I have my girlfriend Michelle and her children Harvey and Amelia so anytime I’m not putting into the company is spent with them.”

If you had to describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?

“I’m going to do it in two and this is something both my mum and Michelle say about me… annoyingly likable!”

How about a Manchester-themed question for the city where it all started. Where is your favourite place to go in Manchester?

“Ancoats, without a shadow of a doubt. After all the development over the years, it’s such a cool place to be. It has the marina, the square, Manchester’s first Michelin star restaurant. I think it’s a really fun and vibrant place to be and a great showcase of what Manchester is becoming.”

What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?

“A good question, ‘don’t give up’. Albert Einstein’s definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, this is so true. You have to try different approaches and with enough hard work and determination, it will work.”

That’s great advice, as we like to say ‘trial and error’! What excites you the most about the future of You Are Home?

“The expansion plans and watching people grow into new roles. The start of our New Sales Director Ant Jones, that’s a big step for me personally, taking a step back from that side. The company and people within the company growing is what excites me the most.”

Thank you for your time today Dave!
